The College of Agriculture at the University of Diyala Discussed a Doctoral Dissertation Entitled:
“A Study of Molecular Variation Among Varieties of Sweet Corn and the Performance of Their Single Crosses with Boron Spraying.”

The study, presented by the student Mona Issam Adnan, aimed to investigate the molecular variation among ten purebred varieties of sweet corn, and to perform hybridization between six of these varieties to produce 15 single-cross hybrids. The performance of these hybrids was then evaluated under the influence of boron spraying. Additionally, the study sought to estimate the hybrid vigor, genetic action, and certain genetic traits in order to select the optimal breeding method to improve these characteristics.

The results showed the following:

  • The varieties differed molecularly and were classified into distinct groups.

  • A set of hybrids exhibited significant hybrid vigor in the desired direction for yield traits and its components.

  • The dominant genetic action was predominantly additive for most of the studied traits, suggesting that the best breeding method for improving these traits is selection.

  • Narrow-sense heritability was moderate to low for most of the traits, indicating the predominance of dominant genetic action.

  • The SSR technique demonstrated precision in studying molecular variation at the DNA level among the purebred varieties of sweet corn.
