The College of Agriculture at the University of Diyala discussed a Master’s thesis entitled:
“The Effects of Plant Growth Regulators on the In Vitro Propagation of Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) and Its Secondary Metabolite Content.”

The study, conducted by postgraduate student Zahraa Yasser Hadi, involved the micropropagation of two carnation cultivars using plant tissue culture techniques. It also investigated the effects of plant growth regulators on plant growth, shoot multiplication, and callus induction in both cultivars under in vitro conditions. Furthermore, the study examined the effects of paclobutrazol on the growth and acclimatization of the two in vitro-propagated carnation cultivars, as well as their bioactive compound content and essential oil production.

The study recommends the following:

  • Conducting further investigations to improve the success rates of micropropagation and promote its application as an effective technique for the large-scale propagation of plants.
  • Utilising the red carnation cultivar in research concerning the production of bioactive compounds and essential oils, owing to its superior performance in terms of secondary metabolite content, essential oil yield, and flowering characteristics.
  • Undertaking further studies employing different concentrations of plant growth regulators and paclobutrazol to determine their effects on improving root formation, flowering, and secondary metabolite production in carnation plants.

The study is consistent with Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), particularly through its contribution to the conservation and propagation of plant genetic resources using tissue culture and in vitro propagation techniques. These approaches support the sustainable utilisation of plant biodiversity and facilitate the investigation of secondary metabolites of biological significance in carnation plants.

Furthermore, the study aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through its contribution to the sustainable utilisation of plant resources.
